How to Get Rid of Fish Smell

The smell of fish is something that lingers in the fishing boat, in the kitchen, the pots and pans, in your car, on your hands, in your clothes and anywhere else that is touched by the fish.

Stainless Steel Cookware

It is not a pleasant smell for most people. I know there are those that say they grew up thinking that fish was supposed to smell like fish, but most find the lingering odor after the fish is long eaten to be unpleasant.

Stainless Steel Cookware

There are many home type remedies that are professed to work. Let me list some here for you to try.

1.) Wash or clean with a solution of vinegar and water.

2.) Wash or clean with a solution of bleach and water.

3.) If it is your refrigerator or freezer, empty it and turn it off. Place a container of boiling hot water with a sliced lemon in it. Leave for about an hour. Then make sure all the smelly ice is out of the freezer area and wipe down the walls and shelves with lemon water. Wipe each item thoroughly before replacing in the refrigerator or freezer.

4.) For the refrigerator or freezer, purchase vanilla-scented fridge deodorizer. It is supposed to kill the bacteria so it will put a stop to the odor for good, not just cover it up. Can be found in a good hardware store or supermarket.

5.) For a container, pots and pans or freezer, cut two potatoes and sprinkle some common table salt on it and place in the container for a couple of hours. Then wash thoroughly.

6.) Wash items with baking soda solution. 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda to 1 quart of water. Keep baking soda in the refrigerator or freezer where you normally store fish.

7.) For pots and pans try brewing some tea for 10-15 minutes. Discard and wash.

8.) For hands, etc. rubs hands with salt and then wash with a lemon scented soap or mild lemon detergent. Liberal use of nail brush at this time will also help.

9.) For clothes, give them a good soak in NappiSan or any other nappy/diaper soaker.

10.) For the fishing boat, body, clothes and children try "Simple Green". Usually can be found at your local supermarket.

11.) "Simple Green" can also be carried along on your fishing trip to clean the smell and residue of insect repellent and sunscreen from your flies or leaders.

12.) This one might take a while but is recommended as having worked. If you have had an ice chest leak in the car try covering with newspaper. This can also be used for the freezer problem. It takes a while for the newspaper to absorb the odor but it seems to do so.

13.) While cooking to reduce the fish smell in the area try heating a little bit of olive oil in a pan and adding cinnamon to it. The fish smell will give way to the sweet cinnamon smell.

14.) If you want to get rid of the fish smell before you cook it, soak the raw fish in a little bit of vinegar and a lot of water. Is should not affect the flavor in any way.

15.) For the microwave try soaking a wet dish towel with a squirt of dish detergent on it and then place it in the center of the microwave and run the microwave on high for a few minutes. The scented stem will clean it. Then let air for a few minutes.

Then there are also some commercial solutions. Here are a few you might want to try:

1.) Zielonka Smell Buster - made in Germany out of special high-grade stainless steel. The Smell Buster is supposed to neutralize odors as soon as it comes into contact with air and water, leaving it fresh and clean. Try an internet search to find it.

2.) Several companies manufacture a liquid concentrate which sells for about .00 for 1/4 to 1/2 ounce. A couple drops are put on a piece of cotton and placed in the area to absorb odors, in the cabinet or in a room.

A couple of brand names are: "Odor-Away" by Wrap-on Co., available at hardware and hospital supply stores and "Clean-Air" found at some appliance repair shops.

Hospital supply stores carry Dow Chemical Hospital Disinfectant and Deodorant Spray. Spray into cabinet and quickly shut the door.

Hope some of these solutions will work for you to get rid of the fish smell wherever it is a problem for you.

Free Plans to Build a Windmill

Are you looking for free plans to build a windmill? The internet is full of valuable resources, and by reading this article you're heading in the right direction. Building your own windmill to generate your own electricity is a great way to reduce your utility bills, and also to help the environment. This article outlines some of the advantages, and also some of the other options related to building your own renewable energy system.

Stainless Steel Cookware

First of all, it is important to keep in mind that windmills aren't the only homemade energy options available to DIY enthusiasts. it is just as simple to build a homemade solar panel as it is to build a wind turbine. In many cases, a combination of both systems is the most effective in generating more than enough electricity for the home. It is important to keep your options open in this regard.

Stainless Steel Cookware

In order to build a good quality, effective, and aesthetically pleasing windmill or solar panel, it is imperative to have a proper instruction manual. Obviously, if you've got a degree in engineering you could make do without detailed schematics, but the majority of people don't have this kind of knowledge. The internet is full of inexpensive and instantly downloadable guides that detail every aspect of DIY windmills and solar panels. At the end of this article is a link to a site with the best online guides available.

Once you've obtained a guide and set up your system, there are a number of ways to run your homemade "power plant". The simplest way to get good use out of your system is to connect only part-time appliances to your homemade energy grid. Microwaves, toasters, electric water boilers, and poll heaters are some great examples. This leaves more important things like refrigerators and air conditioning units on the normal power grid, so they don't drain your self generated system.

If you want to generate all of your electricity from homemade renewable energy sources, you will probably need to hire a qualified electrician to run the system into the AC breaker panel. This is very dangerous and sometimes illegal, so you must check out your local laws and regulations. Again, all of the information required to run your entire home off renewable energy can be found in a good quality online guide.

Setting up a complete home renewable energy system take some time and a lot of hard work. however, this pays off a lot over the years, especially considering the rising costs of electricity from the power stations. By generating your own electricity at home, you can even sell your unused electricity back to the power company. This can make for a nice amount of extra income.

The Top Three Healthy Non Toxic Cookware Sets

With all of the bad publicity that Teflon and aluminum cookware has received, many of us are searching for healthy non toxic cookware. It doesn't make any sense to purchase healthy whole foods and then cook them in toxic pots and pans.

Stainless Steel Cookware

Although stainless steel cookware has been considered a safe alternative, it does have one drawback. Stainless steel cookware is made with a combination of stainless steel, chromium and nickel. None of these are harmful in small doses, but many people are allergic to nickel. If you are allergic to nickel, you should refrain from using stainless steel cookware.

Stainless Steel Cookware

Another concern that many people are not aware of is that some glazes used on crock pots have small amount of lead. The recommendation is to use terra cotta crock pots without the lead glaze.

The best cookware which is healthy and non toxic is anodized aluminum cookware. The process used in making the hard anodized aluminum seals the aluminum with an extremely hard surface coating which is non-reactive and prevents any aluminum from leaching into the food we are cooking.

The following three companies have excellent hard anodized aluminum cookware sets that are healthy and non toxic:

Calphalon is the leading manufacturer but many other companies are now producing cookware sets made with the hard anodized aluminum. Calphalon cookware cooks evenly on lower heat and is stick-resistant. They have stainless steel handles which will stay cool during stovetop cooking. The pans and lids can be used in the oven and broiler.

Cuisinart has introduced a line of non-stick cookware called Cuisinart Green Gourmet Hard Anodized Cookware. They work just like the Teflon cookware, except they don't emit any of the toxic fumes that Teflon pans do. Just like the Teflon pans, they allow you to cook with less oil and they are also energy efficient and eco-friendly. This Green Gourmet cookware set is oven and broiler safe.

KitchenAid has their own set of non-stick anodized aluminum cookware called KitchenAid Gourmet Essentials. This cookware set features stainless steel handles coated with silicone grips. The lids are break resistant glass which makes it nice to see what you are cooking. These pots and pans are oven safe up to 400 degrees.

All three of these companies cookware sets are highly recommended healthy non toxic sets. I use the Kitchen Aid Gourmet Essentials cookware in my kitchen. It is the best value out of the three.

What Is Tri Ply Cookware?

Tri Ply displays one of the worlds most popular and functional cookware concepts. Tri Ply is basically two or three different metals that are laminated or bonded together to obtain the advantages of the two metals in one piece of cookware.

Stainless Steel Cookware

The metals most often used to create this high quality cookware are stainless steel, aluminum and copper. This type of cookware is often more expensive but is very durable and conducts heat faster and more evenly. The two main types are with just a base or disc inserted in the bottom and on your top quality cookware the inside layer goes up the side as well as at the base.

Stainless Steel Cookware

The most popular type of tri ply is stainless steel with aluminum. This type has an aluminum core sandwiched between two layers of stainless steel. The construction of this type of cookware starts in the raw material stage, with sheets and blanks. The aluminum is laminated between two sheets of stainless steel and then molded into the desired shape. The highest quality of this type is when 18/10 stainless steel is used to cover the aluminum core with 18/8 and 18/0 being of slightly lesser quality due to the different amount of nickel and chromium used to make the stainless steel. This type of cookware, because of how it is constructed is expensive but worth the money since it lasts so long. It is great for all types of cooking and most brands can go from the stove top to the oven.

One thing to keep in mind when buying this type of cookware is that you can get the same high quality product without having to spend your life savings. There are quality cookware companies out there that can give you the same great product, made with the same materials as the top brands. Just be sure that you read up on the materials used and how it is made. The big companies know they are popular and will charge you more for their name so be careful.

Another type of tri ply cookware is made with copper, aluminum and stainless steel. It starts the same way as the stainless steel/aluminum kind but has copper laminated on the outside instead of stainless steel. It has three layers with copper on the outside, aluminum in the middle and a stainless steel interior. Copper is used for it's conductivity as well as the aluminum since stainless steel alone is not a good conductor of heat. The process of making this type of cookware is also expensive, a little more so than the stainless steel and aluminum type. It is better for the stove top because of the insulation properties of the copper. Copper does react with food and will discolor it and can even be toxic with some foods which is why most copper cookware is lined with tin, nickel or stainless steel. Despite this fact it is still a top quality product. Having copper cookware will also make a statement in your kitchen with it's classy look and mirrored finish.

As with all cookware products, as stated earlier, you want to do a little homework. Sometimes the big name brands are not the best buy for the money. You can look at what they offer for the price and compare. With a little knowledge you will most likely find a quality cookware set for about 30 to 50 percent cheaper than the big guys without compromising on quality.

How To Polish Stainless Steel Easily

Just about every home has a decent presence of items made of stainless steel these days, especially in the kitchen where cookware has become quite popular. For a homeowner that is unaware of the proper ways to polish steel the possibility exists to ruin items through the use of cleaners that are too caustic or abrasive in nature. While stainless steel is resistant to a number of components that can severely damage ordinary steel, it is not entirely resilient to abuse or neglect. Polishing stainless steel should be viewed as a regular aspect of maintaining items in the condition in which they were originally purchased, and with a few tricks the job is relatively simple.

Stainless Steel Cookware

To polish stainless steel that is still in good condition there is little more that is needed than ordinary soap and water, incorporating the use of a clean soft cloth as a buffer. Simply clean the steel in hot, soapy water making certain to rinse the item thoroughly before drying. After this, buff the steel item using a soft cloth (cotton fabric works best) for 20 or 30 seconds until a shine begins to return. If following this the item still appears to be dull, use a commercial window cleaner containing ammonia spraying, drying and buffing the item until it becomes attractive once again.

Stainless Steel Cookware

To polish stainless steel items that are in poor condition there are two basic ways to go - a commercial stainless steel polish can be used or a simple polish can be made at home. When using a commercial polish caution must be taken to follow directions on the container to the letter, remembering that these cleaners should never be used on stainless steel items used in the preparation of food. Commercial steel cleaners can leave traces of chemicals that be quite poisonous.

A good homemade steel cleaner can be made of a small amount of olive oil and baking soda mixed together then used as a polishing paste. This mixture gives excellent results when combined with a few minutes spent hand-polishing.

Lastly, it is important to remember when polishing stainless steel to never use anything of any kind that can be considered abrasive. A brush, scrubber or even a dirty cloth that holds hard dirt particles can damage a steel item beyond the point of repair very quickly. In this sense, a few minutes of caution can prevent the need for replacement of a damaged steel item.

What is the Best Frying Pan?

When you're looking for a new frying pan, there are a few things that you're going to want to look into before you go out and purchase one. Sure, its funny because many people don't think about researching a frying pan before they purchase one. This is where they make their first mistake. What you're going to find out is that if you do your homework, you can get a great one.

Stainless Steel Cookware

First off, let me tell you a little story about what I did and how you can learn from my mistakes. First of all, I went out, purchased a frying pan set and brought it home. Low and behold, I thought I was getting into something that was going to work for me. Well, to make a long story short, I had found out that it didn't like the dishwasher too well. Now, I have flakes all over the place, just making it a mess!

Stainless Steel Cookware

Now, when you look for a pan that's going to work for you, you're going to want to look into the following...

* Don't be cheap - You have to spend some money here. If you want something that's going to last, you want to spend a few extra bucks.

Cleaning Stainless Steel

Regular maintenance has a "green" component: It reduces the need for harsh chemicals and aggressive cleaning procedures. You should select cleanup items only after you realize your restaurant's needs: What kind of surface are you cleanup?

Stainless Steel Cookware

Preserving it is as important as cleanup it. What types of substances will you be cleanup up? May be the water hard or soft? What is the cleaning procedure, and how frequently will you use this specific product? Two organizations, Green Seal and the Green Restaurant Association, certify cleaning products as eco-friendly.

Stainless Steel Cookware

Recent additions towards the mix include a federally approved disinfectant made from thymol, a derivative of the herb thyme, and products that include promicrobials, beneficial enzymes that work to dissolve bacteria. Green Seal established a standard (GS-37) for restroom chemicals, glass cleaners, and general-purpose cleaners. Because numerous from the surfaces and appliances in a commercial kitchen are created of stainless steel, your employees will require to know how to keep it looking its greatest.

Most individuals assume stainless steel is rustproof, but this is not so. Some background info: metals that corrode inside a natural environment are recognized in the scientific world as active; those that do not are called passive metals. Stainless steel is an alloy containing chromium and nickel, two passive metals that shield it against corrosion by acting as a sort-of protective coating.

Over time, however, three types of wear can break down this protective film:

1. Mechanical abrasion. The use of steel wool pads, wire brushes, and metal scrapers.
2. Drinking water. Hot, hard water can leave behind mineral deposits, often known as scales, scaling, and/or lime buildup. On steel, these look like a white film.
3. Chloride. This really is a type of chlorine found naturally in drinking water, salt, and many foods. If you boil drinking water inside a stainless steel pot, the discoloration you might see is most likely caused by chlorides. Many cleaners and soap products also include them. Rust buildup makes it impossible to sanitize a surface, so it's essential to prevent it by utilizing nonabrasive cloth and/or plastic scouring pads, with alkaline or nonchloride cleanup products at their suggested strengths.

After washing, the stainless steel ought to be rinsed thoroughly, wiped to dampness, and allowed to air-dry totally. (Oxygen helps maintain the "passivity" of the coating.) Some equipment might need to be descaled frequently having a deliming agent. If scaling seems to become a persistent problem, soften the hard water with a filtration system.

Prior to you wipe down a stainless steel surface, look for the grain-microscopic lines that show the direction in which it was very first polished by the manufacturer. Wipe parallel to the grain, within the direction from the lines.
