Cooking With Different Types of Cookware

Almost every day when you listen to the radio or watch television there are reports of the dangers of using certain types of medications. When a new medication is advertised, one is made aware of certain risks that may be involved if taking the medication. We are even warned that certain foods may not be good for us to consume. Therefore, one can also wonder if there are benefits or dangers in cooking with certain types of cookware.
Let us examine some of the advantages and disadvantages of cooking with the different types of cookware that are on the market today. Some of the cookware we will look at are Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Cast Iron and Terra Cotta.

Stainless Steel Cookware

Aluminum cookware is one of the most popular types of cookware sold today. It is inexpensive, light-weight, and heats food evenly, but it can be harmful when acidic foods are cooked in it. There is a common belief that foods cooked in aluminum can react with the metal to form aluminum salts connected with impaired visual motor dexterity and Alzheimer's disease. However, there is no definite scientific evidence to prove this theory. Science has proven that Aluminum and Teflon-lined cookware and bakeware are safest when kept in good condition and used properly.

Stainless Steel Cookware

Stainless steel cookware is considered one of the finest and safest choices in cookware. When an abrasive material is used regularly to clean stainless steel cookware it will release small amounts of chromium and nickel, which can cause problems to one's health. Nickel is not poisonous in small quantities but it can cause an allergic reaction. People with nickel allergies should avoid cooking with stainless steel cookware.

Cast-iron cookware is thick and dense and cannot be beaten for its capability to retain heat. The thickness of cast-iron cookware also provides even heating but can also require more time and energy to heat foods. Cooking with cast iron also provides a source of the important nutrient-iron.

Terra Cotta cookware is also the same as clay cookware. The absorbent nature of clay and the construction of the pans lead to a distinctive way of cooking. Heat is diffused uniformly throughout the cooking process in such a manner that foods cook gradually and evenly, as opposed to a stainless steel pot where cooking occurs primarily at the base. When the clay pot contains water and is placed in the oven, the water slowly evaporates, creating steam within the pores of the clay. During this process, foods form their own juices and this is a healthy and more natural way of cooking, eliminating the need to add more fats and liquid.
